PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard assisted two people in the water Wednesday after their 16-foot catamaran capsized approximately a mile south of Emerald Isle, N.C.
Carteret County 911 dispatchers contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders at approximately 1 p.m. reporting two people in the water.
Sector North Carolina watchstanders dispatched crews aboard a 24-foot Special Purpose Craft - Shallow Water and a 45-foot Response Boat - Medium from Coast Guard Station Emerald Isle to assist.
The crews arrived on scene at approximately 1:15 p.m. and assisted the two people in righting the boat.
"If these guys weren't wearing their life jackets, it could have been a much worse situation due to the high winds and sea state," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Trey Thompson, boarding officer aboard the SPC-SW. "It proabably saved their lives. We brought the girl on our boat, and put a towline on the port side of the catamaran to flip the boat right side up."
Once the boat was upright and the two people were aboard, the Coast Guard crews escorted the boat back to its mooring.
There are no reports of injuries.
