CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard rescued two people from the water after their sailboat capsized in Lake Erie Friday.

The names and hometowns of those rescued are not being released, and there is no Coast Guard imagery available.

At about 3 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Buffalo, N.Y., was notified that a 16-foot sailboat with two people aboard had capsized near Lakewood, Ohio, approximately 300 yards offshore.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor was dispatched aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium.

Upon arriving on scene, the Station Cleveland Harbor boatcrew located and rescued the two people and took them to Edgewater Marina to be evaluated by emergency medical services.

The sailboat remains in the area, mostly submerged, with a small portion of the hull sticking out of the water.

No pollution has been reported.

The two people were sharing a lifejacket before being rescued. When the vessel capsized they were only able to grab one.

"You never know when you might enter the water," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Rashad Lockhart, a break-in coxswain at Station Cleveland Harbor. "Always wear your lifejackets while underway."

Sector Buffalo is making broadcasts to notify other mariners of the sunken vessel and monitoring vessel salvage.
