SAN DIEGO – U.S. Coast Guard crews interdicted 21 suspected undocumented migrants aboard a 25-foot panga approximately 12 miles west of Point Loma Friday.

The Coast Guard launched a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement boat crew from Station San Diego and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Haddock crew to respond to a report of suspected migrants from a Good Samaritan aboard a fishing vessel who contacted the Coast Guard at 9:53 a.m.

The suspects were detained by the Haddock crew and brought to Coast Guard Sector San Diego where U.S. Border Patrol agents took custody of the individuals.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Air and Marine also responded and towed the panga to shore.

The Regional Coordinating Mechanism (ReCoM) is comprised of the U.S. Coast Guard, CBP's Office of Air & Marine, Office of Field Operations, U.S. Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and state and local law enforcement partners operating in the San Diego and Orange County maritime domain. The ReCoM utilizes the fusion of intelligence, planning and operations to target the threat of transnational crime along the coastal border.
