Coast Guard, partners offer commercial fishing drill conductor courses on Oregon Coast

ASTORIA, Ore. — The U.S. Coast Guard, in partnership with the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association, Oregon Crab Commission and Oregon Sea Grant will offer three two-day commercial fishing drill conductor courses on the Oregon Coast beginning in Winchester Bay, March 11.

Each course will include activities and information relating to personal safety gear, safety regulations, on board drills, dewatering pumps, rescue preparation, cold water survival, hypothermia, patching and plugging, marine fire fighting, vessel stability, immersion suits, inflatable life rafts, signal flares and EPIRBs.

The first two-day course will be held in Winchester Bay, March 11-12, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the marina activity center at the Salmon Harbor Marina RV Park.

The next course will be in Newport, March 13-14, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Englund Marine.

The final course will be in Astoria, March 18-19, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Englund Marine.

The courses are free for commercial fishermen, but space is limited and registration is required. To register or for more information, please contact 503-240-9337 or 503-240-9373.

Participants are asked to bring rain gear, a change of clothes, a towel and an immersion suit if possible. Extra suits are available.
