HONOLULU — The Coast Guard is responding to a diesel spill in the Ala Wai small boat harbor, Monday.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center received notification of the spill from the National Response Center at 6:30 a.m. and dispatched pollution responders to investigate.
The sheen is believed to be diesel fuel or another petroleum product. The area impacted is approximately 200 feet by 30 feet. The amount spilled is unknown at this time.
No responsible party has been identified.
The Coast Guard opened the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund and contracted the Pacific Environmental Corporation to clean up the spill.
The Coast Guard uses the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to immediately respond to a discharge until a responsible party is identified. The Emergency Fund can be used by Federal On-Scene Coordinators to cover expenses associated with mitigating the threat of an oil spill, as well as the costs of oil spill containment, countermeasures, cleanup and disposal activities.
