CLEVELAND — Coast Guard crews suspended their search Tuesday night for a 33-year-old man missing near the mouth of the Clinton River in Lake St. Clair since Monday evening.

The man's name is not being released and there is no Coast Guard imagery or video available for this case.

"The decision to suspend a search and rescue case is one of the most difficult decisions imaginable," said Capt. Scott Lemasters, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Detroit. "The Coast Guard and partner agencies have exhausted all available resources with the information that was available. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of everyone involved."

Rescue crews searched more than 177 square miles of water.

Just after 7:30 p.m. Monday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received a report that two men had jumped into the water from their 21-foot pleasure craft to assist a woman in their group who had become fatigued while swimming at the mouth of the Clinton River. After assisting the woman, all three people began to swim back to the boat when one of the men went under the water and did not resurface. He was not wearing a life jacket. A nearby good Samaritan rescued the other two people.

Involved in the search were crews from: Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores, Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, the Coast Guard Auxiliary; Customs and Border Protection, and Macomb County Sheriff's Marine Division that included a dive team.

A previous release for this case is available.
