KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced an injured 64-year-old woman from Alaska Marine Highway System ferry Kennicott near Cordova Wednesday evening.
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, forward deployed in Cordova, safely hoisted the woman and transported her to awaiting medical personnel in Valdez.
Coast Guard 17th District command center watchstanders received a request from the crew of the Kennicott after the woman suffered a head injury. Watchstanders consulted with the Coast Guard duty flight surgeon who recommended a medevac.
“This case illustrates the importance of forward deploying our crews during busy seasons like this,” said Adam De Rocher, a watchstander at Coast Guard 17th District command center. “The forward deployed crew allowed us to respond to this woman in distress and get her to the medical care she needed in a timely manner.”
Weather at the time of the incident was reported as 17 mph winds, 4-foot seas and 10 miles visibility.
