CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard medevaced a woman after she and a child sustained injuries from being ejected as their boat ran hard aground Tuesday near Port O'Connor, Texas.
Coast Guard Station Port O'Connor crews stepped into action after receiving a relay call from 911 at 10:49 a.m., reporting that a pleasure craft with five people aboard ran aground near Pass Cavallo, ejecting a 49-year-old female and a young girl into shallow water. The woman sustained serious injuries, while the young girl's injuries were minor.
The Coast Guard rescue boat crew recovered the injured woman and transported her back to the Coast Guard station where they were met by life flight. She was then flown to Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi. She is in stable condition.
A good Samaritan helped bring the girl to Port O'Connor where she could be transported to a local hospital. She was treated for minor injuries.
“We are grateful we were able to respond to this serious injury in a timely manner,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Aram Chaghatzbanian, a crewmember on the rescue boat. “The successful outcome of this case, bringing this injured woman to higher level care, is due to the excellent team work between local EMS, Life Flight, and our Coast Guard crew.”
With the beautiful summer weather and increased recreational boating, the Coast Guard would like to emphasize the use of safe boating practices. Use caution when transiting areas with shallow water; have a boating plan and communicate it with friends and family; do not boat under the influence of alcohol and always wear a life jacket.
