NEW YORK – The Coast Guard rescued a man today off of Jones Beach Inlet after he fell from his boat and the remaining passengers on board could not retrieve him.

Coast Guard watch standers at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a mayday call via VHF-FM Channel 16 at approximately 3:30 p.m. from a passenger aboard the vessel Pearl of the Sea. The watch standers immediately dispatched a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Jones Beach. The rescue crew quickly arrived on scene and rescued a 75-year-old male.

The man stated he fell off the stern of his 27-foot Cuddy Cabin boat. The remaining passengers on board the vessel threw him a life jacket but were unable to retrieve him.

Immediately following the rescue, the Coast Guard rescue crew conducted a boarding of the vessel and terminated the crew’s voyage due to no operable fire extinguishers and no flares on board. The Nassau County Police Department escorted the vessel to its homeport in Massapequa, N.Y.
