NEW YORK – The Coast Guard rescued two people from the water after their boat began capsizing near Sandy Hook, New Jersey, Aug. 15, 2014.

Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook received a report of a capsizing vessel with two people in the water near Station Sandy Hook.

The station launched a rescue boatcrew and arrived on scene with the two sailors and the 21-foot sailboat in approximately five minutes.

“They must have been in the water for some time before we received the call, because they were already showing signs of hypothermia,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Heller, of Station Sandy Hook. “The fact that they were wearing life jackets tremendously increased their chance of survival.”

The Station Sandy Hook boatcrew recovered the two men from the water, and placed the sailboat in a stern tow.

Once in tow the rescue boatcrew righted the sailboat, and brought the vessel and people to Atlantic Highlands, NJ.

The Coast Guard also responded to a separate case that occurred this morning.

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard assisted a distressed 26-foot pleasure craft, today, near Manhasset Bay.

At 12:22 this morning, Sector New York watchstanders received report of a 26-foot pleasure craft taking on water with eight people aboard in Long Island Sound near Manhasset Bay.

Sector New York issued an urgent marine information broadcast, and launched a rescue boatcrew from Station Kings Point.

The Station Kings Point rescue boatcrew quickly arrived on scene and boarded the vessel. Once aboard, members of the rescue boatcrew noticed the vessel was no longer taking on water.

The rescue boatcrew reported there were no injuries and no signs of pollution, however the vessel had lost their propeller.

The rescue boatcrew placed the vessel in stern tow and brought them back to Brewer Capri Marina in Port Washington, New York, where they conducted a post SAR boarding with no violations.

Brewer Capri Marina staff is handling dewatering and will pull the vessel out of the water.
