NEW YORK – After a busy weekend off of Long Island, the Coast Guard is reminding the boating public to be prepared and to practice safe boating during the active summer season.
The following are separate cases which occurred this past weekend off of Long Island, New York.
A boarding team from Coast Guard Station Fire Island conducted a boarding of a 17-foot vessel, Aug. 16, 2014. The boarding team observed one violation of not having a fire extinguisher onboard. The boarding team terminated the voyage of the vessel and escorted it to Bay Shore Marina in Islip, New York.
A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island responded to a report of a 22-foot pleasure craft with two people aboard that was taking on water, near Fire Island, New York, Aug. 17, 2014. The boatcrew recovered both people aboard, while a commercial salvage company dewatered the vessel. Once enough water was removed from the vessel, the commercial salvage company placed it in tow and began transiting to Blue Point, New York. The boatcrew then transferred the two people onto the commercial salvage company’s vessel so they could remain with their vessel.
A boarding team from Coast Guard Station Fire Island conducted a boarding of a 20-foot vessel, Aug. 17, 2014. The boarding team observed one violation of not having any navigational lights onboard. The boarding team terminated the voyage of the vessel and escorted it to Bay Shore Marina in Islip, New York.
A boarding team from Coast Guard Station Fire Island conducted a boarding of a 26-foot vessel, Aug. 17, 2014. The operator of the vessel appeared to be under the influence, and admitted to smoking marijuana. The boarding team placed the vessel in side tow and transited to Bay Shore Marina in Islip, New York. The boarding team contacted the Suffolk County Police Department who placed the operator under arrest for boating under the influence. The boarding team also terminated the voyage of the vessel after observing the following three violations: No vessel registration onboard, insufficient life jackets and no sound signaling devices. The Suffolk County Police Department impounded the vessel.
