KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced a 21-year-old woman suffering from pregnancy complications aboard the 873-foot Bahaman-flagged cruise ship Norwegian Pearl near Sumner Strait, Friday.
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew safely hoisted the woman and flew her to Sitka Community Hospital.
Coast Guard 17th District command center watchstanders were notified by the cruise ship that the woman needed a higher level of medical care. The duty flight surgeon recommended the medevac and the helicopter crew was dispatched.
"Coast Guard Air Station Sitka crews train to respond to multiple scenarios," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Rich Stewart, flight mechanic, Coast Guard Air Station Sitka. "Our training ensures we are able to quickly respond to aid those in distress."
Weather on scene was reported as 14 mph winds, calm seas and 11-mile visibility.
