SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Coast Guard rescue crews are searching Wednesday for an overdue boater aboard the 42-foot sailing vessel Sigrid covering waters from the northern coast of the Dominican Republic to the western coast of Puerto Rico, including the Mona Passage.
Rafael Conti Cañada, 47, a citizen of Spain, reportedly departed Fort Lauderdale, Fla, Oct. 4, on a one-man voyage and has been overdue since Oct. 20, when he was expected to arrive to Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.
Coast Guard Watchstanders in Sector San Juan were contacted Wednesday morning by Conti’s wife who called from Spain to report her husband overdue and communicate his last know position 214 nautical miles north of the Dominican Republic, when she last spoke with her husband Oct. 17.
Coast Guard rescue crews searching for Conti Cañada are:
- HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Clearwater, Fla.
- MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Borinquen
- Coast Guard Auxiliary fixed-wing aircraft from Puerto Rico
- The AMVER vessel Sifnos conducted callouts and is keeping a lookout
- Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces of Rapid Action (FURA) responded to Coast Guard Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and is querying vessels in the Cabo Rojo Area
