WARRENTON, Ore. — Coast Guard, Yaquina Bay Fire Department and Yaquina Bay Police Department  personnel are searching for a 6-year-old boy reportedly thrown from the Yaquina Bay Bridge Monday night.

"The Coast Guard is bringing multiple assets to bear in an effort to locate this boy reportedly thrown from the bridge,” said Capt. Michael Trimpert, commander, Coast Guard Sector North Bend. “We are working closely with our partners to ensure a timely, efficient and thorough search of the target area.”

A Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew and a 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew are assisting local responders. A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, airborne on a training flight, was also diverted to the search. Responders are concentrating their search around the bay as the tide is incoming.

Sector North Bend watchstanders received the request for assistance from the Newport Police Department at 6:37 p.m. The request followed a report the police received from a woman who stated she had thrown her child from the Yaquina Bay Bridge.

The woman has reportedly been taken into custody by the police and the Yaquina Bay Bridge, briefly closed to traffic, has been reopened. Anyone with information or sightings of a 6-year-old boy in the vicinity of the bridge or bay are asked to contact the local police via 911 or Coast Guard Sector North Bend at 541-756-9210.
