SAN DIEGO – U.S. Coast Guard crews rescued two men aboard a disabled sailboat approximately 1.5 miles south of Point Loma Tuesday night.
During a training flight, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Sector San Diego was alerted to the people in distress when they launched flares from their 38-foot sailboat at approximately 8:45 p.m.
The aircrew diverted to investigate the flares and saw the men aboard the sailing vessel were signaling to them by waving their arms.
The Jayhawk crew lowered a rescue swimmer to the vessel to assess the situation. It was determined the sailboat was disabled and adrift, had lost the ability to steer, had no means of communication and no anchor.
A 45-foot Response Boat crew from Station San Diego launched to assist the boaters. The Coast Guard boatcrew towed the sailing vessel to Shelter Island in San Diego Bay at approximately 11:30 p.m.
