Coast Guard searches for missing fisherman near Sitkinak Island, Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Coast Guard response crews are searching for a man reported overboard from a fishing vessel approximately 30 miles northwest of Sitkinak Island Thursday.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Hickory, along with an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, and a HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Kodiak, are currently searching the last known position of the missing fisherman.

The Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received notification at 10:53 a.m. from the fishing vessel Flying Ocean crew that one of their crewmembers had reportedly fallen overboard while fishing.

“We have dispatched multiple units to the area to search for the missing fisherman,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Victor Santos, a watchstander at Sector Anchorage. “Our units on scene have deployed data marker buoys to help us determine the best search area.”

Weather in the area is reported as 20 mph winds and 6-foot seas.
