NEW ORLEANS — A mariner and his dog were rescued by a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew near Lake Pontchartrain Tuesday evening.

A friend of Tom Wells contacted Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders at 6:12 p.m., reporting that Wells was unable to keep up with the intake of water in his 12-foot flat boat. The watchstanders directed the launch of the helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station New Orleans 25-foot Response Boat — Small crew.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene at 7:20 p.m., safely hoisted Wells and his dog because the small boatcrew was unable to assist him due to shallow water.

The helicopter crew flew Wells and his dog to the air station with no reported injuries where Wells' wife picked him up.
