HOUSTON — An Indonesian man was medevaced Tuesday afternoon, after his leg was injured during mooring operations approximately 57 miles off the coast of Galveston.
The crew of the Peony, a boat that was conducting mooring operations with the 790-foot Challenger, contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston for assistance, reporting that a deckhand on the Challenger suffered a severe leg injury.
The watchstanders launched an aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Houston to medevac the man.
The aircrew transported him to the Univesity of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for immediate medical care.
"Line handling operations are always extremely hazardous, even for the most professional mariners," said Zack Edwards, a command duty officer for Sector Houston-Galveston. "Thank goodness they were able to get a hold of the Coast Guard and we could respond in a timely manner."
