Coast Guard, local EMS respond to capsized boat

MORRO BAY, Calif. – One man has died after he and a friend were thrown into the water when a 21-foot boat capsized off the coast of Morro Bay State Beach, just after 7:25 a.m., June 23, 2013.  

Morro Bay Harbor Patrol initially responded to a 911 call from the surviving passenger who remained conscious and swam ashore.  Harbor Patrol recovered the unconscious victim from the water and brought him to shore where Morro Bay Fire Department commenced emergency CPR.

Within minutes the victim was transported by a 47-foot Coast Guard motor lifeboat and taken to Coast Guard Station Morro Bay where awaiting emergency medical services took him to Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo.

The response was a coordinated effort by the Morro Bay Harbor Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard Station Morro Bay, Morro Bay Fire Department, and San Luis Obispo county paramedics.

Both men were reportedly not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

The name of the victim is being withheld until the next of kin can be notified.
