SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Coast Guard signed a volunteer service agreement and statement of understanding with Lake Superior State University Tuesday at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
Capt. Steve Teschendorf, commander of Sector Sault Ste. Marie, and Professor James Schaefer, chair of the School of Criminal Justice, Fire Science, and Emergency Medical Services at LSSU, signed the service agreement and statement of understanding that provides the opportunity for students to intern with the U.S. Coast Guard in various fields.
"This is yet another avenue for LSSU and Sector Sault to assist each other in preparing students for their future endeavors,” said Brian Streichert, educational services officer at Sector Sault Ste. Marie. “It really shows the relationship the two entities have and strengthens our previous agreement signed almost four years ago."
Students from LSSU will now be able to work in a volunteer capacity with Coast Guard members. One of the goals of this new initiative is to provide exposure to the work environment as a means of encouraging students to develop work ethics and to acquaint them with various Coast Guard missions. The program also aims to provide opportunities for students to become involved in early career explorations as a basis for making realistic decisions regarding their future careers.
In order to be eligible for consideration to work with the Coast Guard, prospective applicants must be enrolled at least half-time with LSSU and be at least 16 years of age. All applicants should be aware that all positions will be unpaid and must be related to their academic program of study.
The first student from LSSU to participate in this new volunteer program is Robert Perry, a senior criminal justice major with a focus on homeland security. Perry just started working in the Planning Department at Sector Sault.
“The knowledge and experience I will obtain will undoubtedly serve me for the rest of my life,” said Perry. “Being able to be actively involved in emergency management and risk assessment processes will allow me to better prepare myself for future employment.”
