NEW YORK – The Coast Guard responded to a recreational vessel in distress in New Haven Harbor, Conn., today.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound Command Center in New Haven, Conn., received a report from a mariner stating that their 19-foot recreational vessel was taking on water and requested assistance.
A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New Haven arrived on scene with the distressed boater and established that the vessel had a crack in the transom. The Boatcrew took the vessel in tow, and transited with the vessel to the Pequonock Yacht Club in New Haven.
“A life jacket is the most important thing I think you can have on your boat,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Tyler West, a coxswain at Station New Haven. “When we arrived to the vessels location the first thing we noticed was that the operator of the vessel had a life jacket on. We then worked quickly and placed the vessel into a side tow, and brought the vessel back to a safe location.”
