B-Roll of the 2014 SeaPerch Challenge on Coast Guard Base Sand Island in Hawaii. The Coast Guard and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard hosted an underwater robotics competition for students in grades 5-8 from 17 local schools. More than 200 students participated. The Office of Naval Research sponsored the challenge, and participants had to assemble the robots from kits that contained parts and test the robots prior to the challenge. The venture is part of an effort by the Defense and Education Depts to generate interest in science, mathematics, engineering and technology among younger students. This is the fourth year of the challenge in Hawaii. Available in high definition.

HONOLULU — Approximately 200 students from 17 area schools participated in an underwater robotics competition at Coast Guard Base Honolulu, Saturday.

Fifth through eighth graders demonstrated their math, science and robot-building skills by competing at the Base Honolulu pool while family members, friends and teachers cheered from the sidelines.

The Hawaii State SeaPerch Underwater Robotics Challenge is an innovative underwater robotics competition where students test robots they have constructed. The students, using kits with low-cost parts, built these robots utilizing engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork and technical applications.

The SeaPerch Challenge is part of the Coast Guard and Department of Defense Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics outreach program for the state of Hawaii.

The Coast Guard, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in conjunction with volunteers from across Hawaii hosted the Hawaii State SeaPerch Underwater Robotics Challenge.

The event is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and the Joint Venture in Education Forum, a partnership between the Department of Defense and state Department of Education.
