SAN DIEGO — U.S. Navy and Coast Guard crews, as well as other boaters in the area, worked together to rescue two people from a burning boat approximately 17 miles west of Point Loma, Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 11:15 a.m., the Coast Guard received a report that the Happy II, a 45-foot recreational boat, had a fire on board.
The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast to alert mariners of the boat fire, diverted an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and launched a 45-foot Response Boat from Station San Diego.
The USS Green Bay, which was operating in the area, responded to the boat fire and launched a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) with a rescue and assistance team on board to assist the people in distress. The team took one of the passengers aboard their boat and were able to extinguish the fire aboard the Happy II.
Nearby boaters aboard the Allison Grace also responded and took the other passenger aboard their boat.
Both people were transferred to the Coast Guard Response Boat and transported back to San Diego. No injuries were reported.
