MIAMI — Six people were rescued from a burning powerboat by a good Samaritan Thursday after the 40-foot vessel caught fire near Islamorada, Florida just after 2 p.m.
There were no reported injuries in the incident.
Coast Guard and Key Largo Fire Department crews responded to the scene approximately five miles north of the Channel 5 Bridge where fire crews attempted to extinguish the flames. Attempts to permanently extinguish the fire were unsuccessful and the flames have reignited.
Boaters in the area are urged to keep away from the scene. Approximately 400 gallons of diesel fuel were reported to be aboard at the time the vessel caught fire.
A Coast Guard crew from Station Islamorada remains on scene to ensure boaters in the area remain a safe distance from the burning vessel. The Coast Guard is working with the vessel's owner to determine a salvage plan for the boat.
